Abstract

By adding tire granules and cement into sandy soil or clay, the geotechnical properties of the mixed soil would be improved, such as increase the stability, enhance the strength and durability, and reduce cost. The mixed soil has broad application prospect as a filling material for subgrade and retaining wall or as a coating material for coast protection. Tests were carried out on the mixed soil to investigate its geotechnical properties. Results reveal that the curing age, tire granule content and cement content have great influence on the unconfined compressive strength of the soil mixtures. With the decrease of tire granule content, the permeability of the soil mixture decreases, the value of CBR (California Bearing Ratio) increases and the shear modulus increases. The tests indicate that the soil mixture have excellent mechanical properties as a modified geotechnical material.
