Abstract:

In the aim of serving river regulation, the department of soil and water conservation in Yangtze River Scientific Research Institute provides service for the south area of China based on the Yangtze River. It conducts fundamental scientific research and provides technical consultancy in the following aspects: soil erosion mechanism, the relation between soil/water loss and river/lake sedimentation, geological disaster, and non-point source pollution, and technology of soil/water conservation. It also undertakes relevant social responsibilities and makes contribution to the national ecological civilization construction. Through efforts in the last decade, the department has made gratifying achievements. It has established a mobile system to precisely and rapidly measuring the soil and water loss on slope, enriched the basic theory of soil and water conservation in the Yangtze river basin featuring “drainage to conserve soil” in the upper Yangtze river, applied the theory of zoning to mountain torrent disaster prevention and control in China, established monitoring and forecast warning system for debris flow, and has proposed key technologies including the technology of measuring soil and water loss on engineering excavation slope and accumulation body, and the industry standard Technical standards for comprehensive control of water and soil erosion in the red soil hilly region in southern China.

Key words: water and soil resources, soil and water conservation, water and soil loss, achievement, the Yangtze River
